This past Sunday, we had a family outing at The Original Breakfast House in Phoenix.  I’m always looking for restaurants that do something extra special for gluten free eaters, and they delivered.   This family friendly place is clearly a local favorite with a following, as there was a gathering waiting for seating.  Fortunately, they have a covered patio where patrons can wait out of the sun – a plus during the AZ summer months.  And, they also offered ice cold bottled water.

With our group of seven, from kids to adults, I was delighted to see that The Original Breakfast House had plenty of options for everyone.  After scanning for Gluten Free items, I was pleased that there were many menu options. Our server, Rachel, also told me that nearly any item can be made GF (and sub in their GF pancakes or roll in place of toast).

I ordered the Five Egg White Scramble that included spinach, mushrooms and onions topped with chopped Monterey jack cheese and sliced avocado with pico de gallo on the side.  The eggs were cooked perfectly, as were the hash browns which were served just the way I like them – extra crispy.  For my extra special gluten free treat, I swapped out the toast for their gluten free granola banana pancakes that turned out to be just the right amount of sweet to compliment the savory eggs and hash browns.  Their proudly brewed Costa  Rican coffee was the right compliment for the meal and had a bold flavor.  I always appreciate restaurants who provide quality, flavorful coffee, as it helps top off the meal.

The owner, John, was on site attending to everyone’s needs and stopped by our table with his sunny disposition and Hawaiian shirt, checking on us which further made us feel like special diners.   He clearly takes pride in his business and wants to ensure that his customers are satisfied.  Rachel, was a top notch server, and made sure we were attended to quickly when seated, providing every need, and telling us about what they are most known for and options to meet all of our diverse needs.

I wanted to concentrate on the GF breakfast for this article, but it would not be right if I failed to make note of the amazing banana nut French toast, chicken-fried chicken, lemon curd pancakes and the decadent cream cheese frosted cinnamon roll that was being devoured around me.  Everyone was thrilled with their breakfast!
