Arcosanti Now Accepting Applications for Fall Land Stewardship and Sustainable Technology Workshop OCT. 14-NOV. 8
Arcosanti’s principle of learning by doing is exemplified in the community’s latest offering, the Fall Land Stewardship and Sustainable Technology workshop. This four-week workshop take place from Monday, Oct. 14, through Friday, Nov. 8. During this immersive experience, attendees will connect to the majestic High Sonoran Desert of Arizona, the unique architecture and a culture that spans both worlds — all while developing new skills and helping to further create community. This hands-on program teaches participants how to steward land and sustainably manage water in a desert through techniques such as improving a rainwater catchment systems, restoring and tending a bioswale orchard and adjusting solar panels for an aquifer well pump. The workshop schedule is as follows: Week One — Seminar Week Week Two — Plants Rejuvenate the bioswale Label fruit trees and shrubs Create a welcoming environment for visitors Week 3 — Water and Sun Explore the East Crescent rainwater collection system Improve the rainwater delivery system Create a solar PV night lighting system Week 4 — Additional Projects Invasive species vs. humans duel Hike to petroglyphs and wildlife cameras Solar pumping, wells and aquifer autumnal Workshop presentation to the Arcosanti community This enriching experience merges theory and practice, providing attendees with real-world approaches to sustainable living in a desert environment. Throughout the course, participants will create meaningful and positive change as a team, present and celebrate their work with everyone, and live, work, and play in the same space. Upon graduation, students will join the more than 8,000 alumni who have helped build the arcology of Arcosanti since its inception in 1970. The cost of this four-week educational experience is $1,550 ($500 for seminar week and $350 per regular work week). Fall Dates for Cosanti’s Popular Tile-Making Experiences Announced SEPT. 28-DEC. 14 - October 19, 2024
For aspiring artists or those interested in learning about the unique craftsmanship that takes place at Cosanti in Paradise Valley, the tile-making experiences are back! Fall dates for this one-day hands-on workshop are Saturday, Sept. 28, Saturday, Oct. 19, Saturday, Nov. 16 and Saturday, Dec. 14. The course guides participants through the one-of-a-kind tile-making and -design process that was developed by The Cosanti Foundation and used every day by the artisans of Cosanti Originals. At 10 a.m., the experience begins with an introductory tour of the grounds, during which the history and theory of Cosanti are explained. Next, at 11 a.m., guests will be guided through the process of forming a clay slab using canvas and a roller, followed by sizing, measuring and cutting the slab into tile pieces. At noon, ceramicist C.J. Milewski will show guests the main tools and techniques used to imprint a design into the clay tile, just as Cosanti artisans do. Milewski will elaborate on the unique styles of artwork within the Cosanti family of design as well as individual expression. At 1 p.m., the experience concludes with a brief photo session of participants and their tiles. After the class, the clay tiles will be fired and lightly glazed. Participants’ tiles will be shipped directly to them. Guests are encouraged to come prepared to “get your hands dirty!” Cost per session is $165, per person. Park West Lifestyle Center Celebrates 5th Annual Boo Bash Oct. 19
Park West, the West Valley’s premier lifestyle destination for dining, entertainment, shopping and services located at 9744 West Northern Avenue, is pleased to present its 5th Annual Boo Bash on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 6-8 p.m. The date, just shy of two weeks before Halloween, allows Peoria residents the opportunity to attend all the private parties and festivities that the city of Peoria hosts in celebration of Halloween. This year’s event will also include a more prominent Día de los Muertos element of celebration. “Our Boo Bash event has grown every year with more family friendly things to see, do and experience,” said Kelly Price, business development manager for Park West. “As always, we value our customer feedback. With that, we decided to move the date of our Boo Bash up a week so families don’t have to choose between their neighborhood celebrations and the city of Peoria’s annual Halloween event. We love hosting this safe, family friendly experience for our neighbors and look forward to seeing our neighbors costume!” During the event, guests can enjoy a host of frightfully family friendly activations and experiences including three magic shows, trunk or treat sponsored by Arrowhead Honda, performances by Boom Percussion, a DJ, Halloween games and prizes, inflatables, a funeral hearse, and a haunted horse and carriage.
