Gangnam Style – Great Happy Hour Sushi by ASU
Pulling up to Gangnam Sushi it does not look like much. Nestled in the corner of a small strip mall alongside one of the busiest streets in Tempe, it is easy to overlook it.
I found Gangnam Sushi after doing a Yelp search for Japanese- I was in need of a good, cheap meal after a long day. What caught me is the Mcdonalds-esque Happy Hour menu that featured food and drinks from $1-6.
When we walked in the restaurant was sparsely populated, but as the meal (and Happy Hour) went on, it started to fill. After we ordered, the food came quick and hot and the servers were more than attentive of drink refills and finished plates.
Though we tried a ton of dishes, the plate that stood apart was the $1 miso soup. Miso is not hard to make, but the broth at Gangnam Sushi was to die for. If that was the only dish I had that night I would have been completely content. The soup had just enough seaweed and tofu to aide in balancing the saltiness of the rich broth, but was sparse enough to savor the broth itself.
We also tried the asparagus and spicy tuna rolls which were both plentiful portions for the price. 6-8 pieces seemed standard to the restaurant, though we saw large combo plates served to other tables.
With a Happy Hour like that, Gangnam Sushi is officially my new Tempe sushi spot. Even when the restaurant was slow, the servers were kind and the food came out quickly. The atmosphere is perfect for a date or business dinner (we saw both) and cheap enough to take someone you don’t even like.
Gangnam Sushi is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. Friday-Saturday and 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday.
