Can I get a yee haw, y’all? What do you get when you have a guy from Tennessee named Bubba serving slow smoked barbeque at a place called Redneck’s? If you can’t answer because your mouth is watering, you are absolutely right.

I ordered the ½ rack of pork ribs and fixin’s and the frozen lemon pie from the chalk board menu at the cafeteria style counter. It took me longer to decide what I wanted than it took for my meal to be delivered to my picnic table. I attribute my indecision to the amazing aromas the lazy overhead fans were tantalizing me with.

The sweet smoky meat fell from the bone, tender and succulent. Savory pork richness glistened, inviting me to dig in with my fingers. There are three bottles of freshly made sauce on each table, along with a welcome roll of paper towels. I chose Redneck’s BBQ sauce and “Pop” sauce to bathe my 10 inches of crispy, delectable ecstasy. The “Pop” sauce is a bright burst of herbs and vinegar designed to enhance the smokiness that is achieved by smoking the meat 14 to 16 hours, in this case, using hickory wood.

I eyed the frozen lemon pie as I licked the sticky remnants from my saucy fingers. Note to self: don’t wear a white shirt next time. The decadent looking lemon pie is something of a local legend and made fresh by Bubba’s wife, Tammy. Everything served at Redneck’s is made with fresh ingredients from family recipes. The tangy coolness of the fluffy frozen filling contrasted nicely with the crunchy graham cracker crust. The tart zing of lemon, tempered by a topping of heavy sweetened cream was a perfect compliment and finish to an outstanding meal.

Bubba cheerfully admits he is the “redneck” this charming storefront establishment is named for. He has been quoted as saying he wants his reputation to “stand for quality.” The down home food served at Redneck’s certainly reflects this sentiment.
