Sorso Opens Tonight – Scottsdale Quarter

The Deal: A Great New Wine Bar in The Scottsdale Quarter
The Place: Sorso Wine Room
The Location: 15037 N Scottsdale Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85260 (480) 270-8123

Tonight (April 7th), Scottsdale Quarter will welcome Sorso Wine Room, a wine bar bringing a new nightlife experience to the city through its WineEmotion dispensing systems. With 32 bottles from around the world attached to taps that dispense the wine, guests can taste their way through several wines by self-selecting a full pour, a taste, or what “Sorso” means in Italian – a sip. Through this interactive approach, visitors can design their own wine experience without having to commit to a glass as soon as they sit down. The new restaurant also has an expansive by-the-bottle list and nine by-the-glass options for patrons who still might want the traditional wine drinking experience. Craft beers on tap and in bottle, as well as a menu of gourmet bites including meat, cheese, bruschetta and sweets will also be available.

As for tonight…They are partnering with Chrysalis, an AZ based domestic abuse agency, for Arizona Gives Day. Anyone who donates at least $25 to Chrysalis between the hours of 4-7 will receive 25% off of their check up to $100. A representative with Chrysalis will be at Sorso’s during that time accepting donations.

For owners Mark and Lauren Teahen, the idea came out of a trip to Italy in 2014, one whose initial purpose had nothing to do with wine. Having recently left Major League Baseball after a 12-season career with the Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox and Toronto Blue Jays, Mark was considering pursuing baseball in Europe, and the Teahens went to explore their potential new home. After visiting a wine bar in Chianti that had similar dispensing systems, they began wondering why there wasn’t something like it in Scottsdale.

“It was so different from any other kind of experience we’d had dining out here. If we want to go for a drink, we’re past the phase of standing in line to get into a bar. We’re looking for a more relaxed, lounge-type environment, and I think a lot of people our age are looking for that niche. We felt our concept for Sorso would work really well in our area,” said Lauren.

Sorso’s evolving wine selection will be made up of unique wines from around the world. The 2,515 square-foot space will combine old and new world interiors along with ambient lighting to create a contemporary lounge feel. It has been designed to mirror the Teahen’s own self-educated journey through wine, from how the dispensing machines have been set up to the decor, which will include maps and art pieces to help people learn as they go.

“In some ways with these machines, we feel people can go through our past eight years of starting with Riesling and working our way up to more complex reds. Just as we learned about wine, we hope to offer people the chance to educate themselves without it being an overbearing task,” explained Mark.

While the dispensers are a unique feature, the Teahens hope what’s most important to them will shine through: building community and connection. Some of Sorso’s design elements include ways in which people can leave their own mark on the place, creating a connection to the space, other visitors and the Teahens themselves. They plan to be present, ensuring their staff is an extension of them and exudes the feeling of community that comes with a family-owned and run establishment.

“We want people to have a good time whether they come with a group or by themselves, whether they’re new to wine or experienced,” said Lauren.
