Located along the ever-popular Roosevelt Row, Songbird Coffee & Tea House is your home away from home in downtown Phoenix. It is most perfectly described as “an extension of your living room” — a phrase found on their website used as the inspiration for the design. The rough-around-the-edges character and charm of the building compliments the unique style of the interior and adds to the overall personality of the café.

Established in 2012, Songbird Coffee & Tea House is a welcoming and relaxing space complete with a fireplace, comfortable sofas and armchairs, and fun alternative music. It also includes quirky features such as bird cage light fixtures and a (real) tree trunk beam adorned with string lights in their kitchen area. The cozy, slow-paced setting encourages customers to unwind and provides an escape from a busy day of work or school. Their employees are friendly and eager to ask to you about your day or answer any questions you may have.

Their large outdoor sitting area with a bright green porch swing and multiple wooden tables and chairs is the perfect place for a coffee date or a long day of studying (or taking aesthetic pictures of latte art for your Instagram). Better yet, like their Facebook page to stay up to date on their “First Fridays” where Songbird hosts events such as live music from local musicians, art exhibits and movie nights.

While Songbird focuses on coffee and tea, they also offer house-made pastries and snacks such as muffins and granola with milk. They partner with Treehouse Bakery—located less than 2 miles away—to offer vegan brownies, scones and cookies as well. Songbird takes pride in using locally sourced ingredients from Tempe and Tucson to give their coffee and tea an edge that just can’t be found in products from large franchises. We ordered a mocha with house-made dark chocolate ($4.50) but also recommend the hot matcha tea latte ($3.75). Each drink is just as delicious as the next, and prices range anywhere from $3 to $5. Coffee beans and tins of various loose-leaf tea powders are also available for purchase.

Songbird Coffee & Tea is open Monday through Sunday 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and offers free parking in a small lot behind the building. It is located five minutes away from the Central Avenue and Roosevelt light rail and three blocks away from Arizona State’s downtown Phoenix campus. While Songbird mainly attracts college students from ASU, it is the ideal place for anyone who is looking for their new favorite coffee shop.
