  • Scottsdale Encourages the Community to “Fall in Love with Scottsdale Civic Center”

    Date: October 3, 2023 - November 22, 2023

This fall, the city of Scottsdale officially unveils the much-anticipated Scottsdale Civic Center remodel — a comprehensive renovation of the area that has served as the city’s civic and signature special event and gathering space for 55 years.   The renewed and refreshed Civic Center provides locals and visitors alike with a better experience than ever, a beautiful place to gather for art, culture, entertainment and festivals and family relaxation.   Improvements to Scottsdale Civic Center were finalized in March and beginning in October, the city is celebrating with the aptly named Fall in Love with Scottsdale Civic Center event. Fall in Love with Scottsdale Civic Center features more than 70 activities taking place in and around the center and throughout Old Town from Tuesday, Oct. 3 through Wednesday, Nov. 22.   “We are absolutely thrilled to officially relaunch Scottsdale Civic Center, the original epicenter of Scottsdale’s arts culture, hospitality, community spirit and unique Western reputation,” said Scottsdale Mayor David Ortega. “Going way beyond renovation, we can now enjoy three new outdoor stages, kid-friendly play areas, botanical exhibits, 140 new shade trees and water conservation turf areas. We invite everyone to celebrate with us.”   Scottsdale Civic Center’s revitalization began with construction in October 2021. The overhaul of the area included improvements to structural and electrical deficiencies as well as enhancements to provide a safe and attractive environment for residents and visitors. Scottsdale Civic Center’s outdoor public space was also updated to be event ready, placing itself in a competitive position to attract large-scale events. The $33.5 million project was financed primarily with bonds approved by Scottsdale voters in 2019.   Improvements include a new permanent stage at the East Bowl with a shade structure, and a new centrally located 360-degree performance structure between the Civic Loop and West Bowl. The Social Hub, located between Scottsdale City Hall and Civic Center Library provides direct connection to a new children’s library entrance and boasts a splash pad and fog feature, a children’s play area and shaded social and picnic areas. Substantial reconstruction of the west entrance — now named West Paseo — new restrooms near the Social Hub and updated City Hall lagoons round out the project improvements.   Naturally, art remains a core element of the Scottsdale Civic Center. Many of the beloved pieces of the Scottsdale Public Art Collection are back, with some in new locations. The intuitive Civic Loop provides a walking experience to view most of the iconic public art within Scottsdale Civic Center.   Mayor Ortega notes the completed renovation will better serve as a cohesive connector for the entire area.   “Scottsdale Civic Center links Scottsdale Stadium, the iconic City Hall and Civic Center Library, the renowned Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and Scottsdale Historical Museum to Historic Old Town, Main Street galleries, Museum of the West and northbound to the Scottsdale Waterfront and fabulous Scottsdale Fashion Square,” he said.   Fall in Love with Civic Center starts off with a bang Tuesday, Oct. 3 with the Read more [...]

FOUND:RE Contemporary at FOUND:RE Phoenix Hotel Announces New Exhibition

    Date: October 6, 2023

Time: 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm

FOUND:RE Contemporary at FOUND:RE Phoenix Hotel, located at 1100 N. Central Ave., has announced its latest art exhibition. “Saguaros & Shards” by Stacy Holmstedt, will debut with an opening reception on Friday, Oct. 6 from 6-9 pm. and remain on display through Sunday, Dec. 31. The studio space will also serve as a working studio for Holmstedt, who will be painting and mosaicking on a weekly basis throughout the duration of the show’s exhibition. “We are thrilled to present Stacy’s contrasting mediums of acrylic paint and mosaics,” said FOUND:RE Curator Jordan Zurn. “Regardless of medium, her vibrant art showcases such raw and natural talent. We encourage art enthusiasts to not only view her works but come watch her painting and mosaicking live here at the FOUND:RE.” The Mesa-based mostly self-taught artist calls her paintings her love letters to Arizona, while the Gemini in her also inspires her to pursue a dual passion of making mosaic artworks. The software designer by trade also credits night classes at Scottsdale Artists School and the Mesa Arts Center as well as her love of Arizona for her inspiration. “Rather than creating consistently in the same style, I prefer experimentation. I like to work for months on a deep concentration piece, followed by a burst of loose gestural work. When I need a break from painting, I’ll make a mosaic out of glass, beads or buttons. When I tire of nipping glass, it’s back to the easel. I create with both sides of my brain because I paint with my left hand and nip my mosaic pieces with my right,” Holmstedt said. “Though I’ve been exhibiting in group shows around Arizona since 2016, FOUND:RE Contemporary is my debut solo show and has my gratitude for the opportunity.”   “Saguaros and Shards” will be presented as part of FOUND:RE Contemporary’s regular schedule of rotating exhibitions organized by Zurn. These works will also be for sale in person and via foundrecontemporary.com. Holmstedt’s live onsite schedule throughout the exhibition will soon be announced. Date: October 7, 2023 - October 8, 2023

Arcosanti is filled with hands-on experiences that honor traditional methods. It’s latest workshop provides attendees with the opportunity to learn and participate in an ancient form of firing pottery that uses natural materials and does not require the use of gas or electricity. The two-day program takes place at Arcosanti in Mayer on Saturday, Oct. 7 and Sunday, Oct. 8.   During the experience, guests will select a small pre-made (bisque) clay vessel to decorate with various colorants and learn the process of burnishing surfaces on leather hard clay. Then the firing process begins, which lasts several hours until the pit is covered and left overnight.   That evening, participants will join a potluck-style dinner followed by a short presentation of the history of pit firing and its significance in the indigenous communities of the Southwest as well as land stewardship. Overnight accommodations at Arcosanti can be reserved or guests may camp onsite.   The next morning begins with a beautiful nature hike followed by brunch in the Arcosanti Café. During the hike, guests will collect a burnishing stone to take for their future work. By afternoon, the pit should be cooled enough to unload. During this process discussion begins on how to finish the vessels with waxing or leaving them as is. At the end of the program, guests will take home their decorated, burnished and fired vessel.   Cost is $325 (lunch and brunch included); camping is $15. Guests can reserve a room at Arcosanti via arcosanti.org/stay/guest-rooms/.   For complete details (including important information on what to bring) and registration, visit https://www.arcosanti.org/workshops/ (scroll down to select Clay Pit-firing Workshop).
